You may or may not be aware that police in Queensland are promoting $5 blue wrist bands (a "thin blue line") with Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley's badge number on them. The wrist bands are a sign of support for the cop who faces trial next week for killing Mulrunji Doomadgee in November 2004 while in police custody.The police commissioner has refused to ban police officers from wearing the wrist bands while on duty (see here) despite the fact they are clearly inflammatory. Police even wore the wrist bands to the opening of an indigenous court one day after the commissioner promised that police would use indiscretion (see here).
Socialist Alliance has responded (at the request of Sam Watson) by producing yellow and black wristbands to show our solidarity with Mulrunji, NOT police who murder (see below). Hundreds of Aboriginal people and community supporters are expected to gather outside the court in Townsville where Hurley will be tried (see here).
