Sydney Mulrunji rally

[Images and text: Alex Bainbridge, Sydney Socialist Alliance]:Thirty people gathered in Sydney in a small but important solidarity action calling for justice for Mulrunji - the Aboriginal person murdered by police on Palm Island in November 2004. The action was called with little over 24 hours notice - timed to coincide with protest actions in Brisbane and Melbourne.

We pointed out that there was no justice in the outcome of the trial of Chris Hurley in Townsville a few days before. There is always a struggle for justice for Aboriginal people in this country but the effort of struggle can bear fruit - how else would the case have got this far. We resolved to continue the struggle and to return in larger numbers on July 14 when a national day of action against Black deaths in custody will take place.

Stop Cops Killing Blacks - this sign was made during the action itself as a spontaneous act of protest.
Peter Boyle spoke about the horrendous actions of the Howard government in responding to poverty and unemployment not with public services and jobs but with more cops. Check out the Socialist Alliance statement on Howard's racist policy announcement.
