Venezuela Independence Day conference boosts solidarity

AVSN members and supporters were among the 150 or so people who participated in the Independence Day conference hosted by the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Sydney on July 7. The day brought together a range of organisations and individuals to discuss the history of and tremendous developments in the Bolivarian revolution, and projects and ideas to strengthen awareness and solidarity in Australia with the Venezuelan people. Queens Beach ALP branch affiliates to AVSN

The AVSN warmly welcomes its newest affiliate - the Queens Beach branch of the Australian Labor Party, in central Queensland. It is great news that solidarity with the people of Venezuela is extending into regional Australia. For the experience of a lifetime - register for the next brigade to Venezuela

Planning is now under way for the next solidarity brigade to Venezuela, from November 23 to December 3. The brigade offers a unique opportunity to see first-hand the unfolding revolution in Venezuela as the people take over more workplaces, extend their free education and health programs, develop community controlled media, organise their neighbourhoods and take big steps towards exercising "popular power" at every level of their society.

This brigade will include a special focus on Indigenous people's issues, and will include visits to Indigenous communities and meetings with Indigenous activists and leaders. The AVSN has been contacted by people in Canada, Europe and Aotearoa/NZ interested in joining the brigade.
The deadline for registering for the next brigade is August 31, so get in touch to find out more.

Win a trip to Venezuela for just $10

If you would love to join a brigade to Venezuela but can't afford the cost right now, why not enter the AVSN's guessing competition instead? For just $10 per ticket, you could win a place on the November-December 2007 or May Day 2008 brigade with your airfares and accommodation fully paid. The competition will be drawn on October 14, and all proceeds will help the AVSN continue its solidarity work in 2008. Tickets are available from local AVSN committees, or send your name and address, and how many tickets you want, to info@venezuelasolidarity.org and we will post them to you.

Young Venezuelan activist to speak in Australia

The AVSN is delighted that Sandino Carrizales, a young activist from Caracas, is planning to visit Australia in October to participate in the Latin America & Asia Pacific International Solidarity Forum in Melbourne and possibly do a speaking tour around the major cities afterwards. Sandino has played an active role in the Venezuelan revolution - in the student movement, community media and the development of communal councils - and will be able to give people in Australia a good insight into the Bolivarian revolution from the viewpoint of Venezuela's young people. Stay in touch with your local AVSN committee for news about his visit.

AVSN members now based in Caracas

AVSN founding members Fred Fuentes and Kiraz Janicke left Australia this month to live and work in Caracas for the next six to 12 months. While they are there, Fred and Kiraz will be kept busy helping with AVSN projects such as organising the brigades and translating information about developments there into English for distribution to supporters in Australia and elsewhere.

They plan to set up a blog, linked to the AVSN website, to report on some of their experiences and observations of the process unfolding in Venezuela, and will also be re-opening the Green Left Weekly bureau there, guaranteeing GLW readers regular news and analysis from the heart of the revolution. Don't miss the International Solidarity Forum, October 11-14

The Latin America & Asia Pacific International Solidarity Forum, which is being co-organised by the AVSN, is shaping up to be the most important progressive political conference in Australia this year. With 28 mass movement and left party activists from 18 countries confirmed to attend - including three Venezuelans - the discussions and debates over the four days promise to be both informative and inspiring.

The forum venues - RMIT and Victoria Trades Hall - are centrally located and easily accessible to cheap local accommodation, and the AVSN is helping to organise group transport to Melbourne from some cities.

The forum organisers are inviting workshop presentations and AVSN members and supporters are encouraged to submit suggestions for workshop topics they would like to present, or would like AVSN to include in the forum program.

For more information about the forum, to register for it, help promote it or submit a workshop, visit www.solidarityforum2007.org or contact the AVSN.
