It is official, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — leading a socialist revolution in Venezuela and depised by the powerful for his anti-imperialist stance and loved by ordinary people the world over for the same reason — plans to visit Australia in the coming year.
At the Sydney Green Left Weekly dinner on September 29, Venezuela's charge d'affairs to Australia, Nelson Davila, announced that Chavez has confirmed he has accepted the invitation GLW journalist Coral Wynter extended to him in Venezuela to come to Australia.
This is the culmination of a petition campaign run by the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network inviting Chavez to Australia.
Chavez has travelled and spoken at mass meetings to thousands in countries all over the world — giving inspiration and urging a global struggle against imperialism and for a "socialism of the 21st century". These radical ideas, being put into practice by millions of working people in Venezuela, will now come to our shores!
Stay tuned for specific details.
