SOCIALIST ALLIANCE FEDERAL PARTY REGISTRATION APPROVED

From: Dick Nichols (SA National Coordinator)

The Socialist Alliance National Office today received the following email from the Australian Electoral Commission
QUOTE:
Your party registration has been approved.
It might take us a week to complete minor formalities, such as
- getting you on the Current List of Registered Parties on the AEC website;
- Gazetting your registration; and
- the formal notification letter reaching you.
However, you will be on the Register of Political Parties before the 2007 election.

This is a significant achievement on the part of the Alliance because all parties without elected federal representatives were automatically de-registered earlier this year in line with new and stricter electoral laws passed last year. It is now much harder to obtain and maintain registered party status for any formation not now currently represented in federal parliament -- in effect, the Liberals, ALP, Greens, Nationals, Family First (thanks of course to the Vic ALP!)and Democrats.

The review and vetting process is much more bureaucratic and interventionist than it has previously been.

Nonethleless, the key advantage with registration is that 'Socialist Alliance' appears as a bona fide party entity on all ballot papers at the federal election and each SA candidate is listed with their SA party affiliation.
