The road ahead...into 2008

by Dave Riley

I thought 2005 was a bummer of a year. As the reality of John Howard's 2004 re-election set in we had to deal with the Work Choices bandwagon.

I was indeed demoralizing and more than a few activists went belly up.

Prospects improved during 2006 -- what with the Lebanon mobes and the quickening under Your Rights at Work banner. (Or the Chinese restaurant version: 'your rights at wok.')

Having just got rid of his nibs -- John Winston Howard - via a savage revenge -- 2008 is looking good.

When the new year starts we are all going to be pretty full of ourselves even though the bloody deed was done with a pencil in a polling booth.

Was our rights at work worth voting for? Of course. But there was enough of the fighting for to make a few of us wonder that something else is in the wind.

After all, despite our passions all we get for our pains is the smirking Mandarin, Kevin Michael Rudd BA (Hons) and his team of hopefuls.

Is that all there is?
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
Labor under Rudd? The most conservative ALP coming together imaginable? The Me Too party....

So I have to say that we cannot afford to be smug.Kevin Rudd can because it's probably genetic with him. But we wee ones, your ordinary- everyday - types with our mortgages, nine to fives and hemorrhoids -- are still stuck on the same treadmill we were on back in 2005-- except that the foreman has changed.

And what with one thing and another -- given all that sweat & angst that we carried into the polling booth on November 24th last -- I think we've got hopes. And hopes if thwarted can turn...can turn nasty.
