My daughter is distressed because Ledger was so important to Ten Things I hate About You. But really the main game is what the guy gave us in terms of occupying a personal space. He was able to enrich the experience of it for any one who cared to relate to it. Done with out histrionics or much calculation -- Ledger was an actor whose characters were 'normal' rather than larger than life.

Go back and watch Two Hands -- one of the best Australian movies I think.

And when you get to Brokeback Mountain this guy is anyone of us -- not in crude caricature like a generic stereotype, but as tangible as anyone in our own immediate acquaintance.

He was alive but not especially interesting. he was a cowboy -- but that was very "so what"? He could have been a plumber.

Thats' so very rare. And thats' why we'll miss him -- because he -- & his characterisations -- weren't anywhere histrionic. He was always a member of the working class trying to make his way in the world in way of loving and surviving.
