3rd Brisbane Latin American film festival, Aug 14-16

Only one week until the 3rd Brisbane Latin American film festival, Aug 14-16, featuring:
  • - Inspiring films from Cuba, Bolivia, El Salvador + more
  • - Special guest introductions from Aboriginal activist Sam Watson; Cuban expert & filmmaker Tim Anderson; and the El Salvadoran community
  • - Delicious Latino dinner and drinks nightly, culminating in a post-festival fiesta Saturday night.

COCALERO (Bolivia)
The story of how an Aymara Indian named Evo Morales, supported by poor coca leaf farmers, camapigned through the Andes and Amazon - to become Bolivia's first Indigenous president. A luminous portrait of working people in rare triumph against US imperialism.

Fri Aug 15, 7pm (dinner 6:30pm)
THE DOCTORS OF TOMORROW (Cuba/East Timor)
Witness how tiny, distant Cuba has provided not only more doctors to Timor than any country, but also scholarships for Timorese to study medicine in Cuba, so the newest nation can become self-sufficient in quality health care

Excerpts from SALUD! (Cuba) A film showing the Cuban revolution in action, hitting the road with some of the 28,000 Cuban health professionals serving in 68 countries.

Sat Aug 16, 7pm (dinner 6:30pm)
ROMERO (El Salvador)
A remarkable feature film starring Raul Julia as El Salvador's Archbishop, who journeys from moderation to becoming a liberation figure in the people's struggle against wealthy rulers and military tyranny.
Guest introduction by FMLN supporters in Brisbane, proceeds to the FMLN's 2009 electoral campaign.
