First election victory for the Socialist Alliance

SA wins a local government seat in Fremantle.

Comment:
There's sure to be a lot of lessons we can learn from this very creatively managed and pitched campaign. After doing so well at the Council elections in Victoria last year, the SA is beginning to register in the electorate.

And those on the far left -- who denigrate the project -- maybe should reconsider their stance  in regard to the Alliance.

With Stephen Jolly's win in a Melbourne council ward  in 2004, a socialist left may indeed be crawling back into political focus. If we are to assert ourselves the only way to do it is together in a spirit of unity and shared outlook.

Victory for Sam by 100 votes

Sam Wainwright won 438 votes (33.44%) - over 100 more votes than Sam's nearest competitor and enough to put him over the line for the Hilton Ward of Fremantle Council.

Official election results are here.

At a victory celebration last night, Sam told supporters that this victory was for the whole Socialist Alliance and the diverse supporters of his campaign. He was proud that this campaign had been successful while being fully open about his socialist, environmentalist and unionist convictions.

Sam is the first Socialist Alliance member to be elected to a local government position in Australia.

Go here to leave congratulations.
